Theory

Theory is like grammar. You don't need to know anything about grammar in order to talk. But in order to have a rich and deeper knowledge of the english language, you would need to study and know grammar. Theory is like that. Anyone could play a song on the piano without having any idea of what they were doing. Theory is the grammar part of music. It is the deeper knowledge of music...not just playing an instrument. Theory is chord structure, key signatures, scales, intervals, minors, majors, diminished, augmented, forms of music, and so on. Maybe some of these words would make sense and maybe some of them would not.

I love theory! Why? I'm not sure. Majority of my students are not fans at all. Most laugh at me. Some think it's boring. Well anything is boring when you are not good at it! But once you get good at something, it's not really boring anymore. Anyway, I want to let you know my favorite set of theory books. I learned using these and I have only been teaching out of these books.

Basics of Keyboard Theory by Julie Johnson

From preparatory to advanced, they cover everything you need to know about piano theory. The prep level is great to start if you have never touched the piano before. You can order the books online or most piano stores (that carry music) have them. I will have more to come with theory!
